Alabama Power volunteers make Water Day splash for adults with disabilities

Some great ways to beat the Alabama heat include water balloons, a water squirter and a dunk tank. Fortunately, United Ability’s annual Water Day at Dr. E’s Place had all three.

Members of the Alabama Power Service Organization helped make the July 9 event a splash for adults with disabilities who participate in United Ability’s adult program.

From water balloons and squirters to water tables and a dunk tank, the morning was filled with opportunities for fun, laughter and connection. Volunteers helped set up the event, facilitated activities and cleaned up afterward. Indoor activities were also available for participants who chose to stay dry.

But Water Day was about more than staying cool.

“Water Day is so much more than a day of fun for the adults we serve at United Ability’s Dr. E’s Place,” said Gabby Thabes, manager of donor and volunteer relations at United Ability. “It’s an opportunity to build friendships, enjoy new experiences that support overall well-being and quality of life, and simply celebrate summer in an environment where everyone belongs.”

The event is one example of the life-enriching activities offered through United Ability’s adult program. Participants take part in community outings, recreation and leisure activities, life skills training, workplace readiness and pre-vocational skills training, among other programs.

The goal is to help individuals with disabilities participate more fully in their communities while developing skills and pursuing their own interests.

“Seeing the smiles on participants’ faces during Water Day reminds us why experiences like this matter so much,” Thabes said. “The Alabama Power Service Organization’s willingness to volunteer made the day incredibly meaningful. Their enthusiasm and energy created an event filled with joy, connection and lasting memories for the participants, and we are truly grateful for their support.”

The Alabama Power Foundation also has supported United Ability’s work.

In 2025, the foundation awarded a grant supporting Journey of Hope, United Ability’s signature fundraising event. The event helps fund programs and services ranging from early intervention and integrated early learning to employment services, medical clinics and adult enrichment programs.

The Alabama Power Foundation also partnered with United Ability in 2024 through a Programmatic Related Investment to support the growth of Gone for Good, a United Ability business that provides meaningful employment for adults with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Since 2006, Gone for Good has helped employees gain skills and work experience as they prepare for competitive employment.

Together, those efforts reflect a shared commitment to creating opportunities for people with disabilities to live full, meaningful lives.
