For students training to become utility lineworkers, there’s nothing quite like getting hands-on experience with the same tools they’ll use on the job. Thanks to Alabama Power, Lawson State Community College now has a new way to give students that real-world practice — a donated bucket truck that can lift trainees more than 50 feet into the air.

The truck will be used in the college’s 10-week lineworker training program, where students learn everything from climbing poles and installing power lines to driving utility trucks and practicing ladder safety. It’s a tough program to get into — more than 300 people applied in late 2025, but only 10 were accepted.

With demand for skilled lineworkers on the rise, Lawson State’s training program is helping students step into strong careers that keep communities connected and the lights on. And now, with the addition of a bucket truck, those future lineworkers can practice exactly how they’ll work once they’re out in the field.
